The Hand & Arm Swing | Introduction to the Hand & Arm Swing.

Your 'Hand & Arm Swing' is the third of three learning elements in your golf game. It should be a natural free flowing motion that moves into space created by the second learning element which is your Core Body Movements (Stomach, Chest & Shoulders) rotating round a foundation of Angles and Lines that have been created from your first learning element which is a square and balanced 'Address & Posture Position' to suit the shot you are playing and the club you are using.

Within my 'Hand & Arm Swing Instruction' I am going to assume your 'Address & Posture Position' is set squarely to 'Target' and your 'Core Body Movements' are rotating correctly round 'Angles & Lines' that have been created from your 'Address Position'. I am going to talk primarily about the movements your Hands & Arms should be encouraged to make within your 'Golf Swing' and how they should be encouraged to control your swing's Rhythm, Feel and Movement as well as controlling the Golf Club to be able to control your Ball's Flight, Distance and Bounce. 

It is 'Not' my intention to tell you how to Swing the Golf Club in detail, as every golfer has different physical and golfing abilities although I strongly believe that if you have 'Addressed' the ball correctly to suit the shot you are playing and club you are using then rotate your 'Core Body Movements' correctly round 'Angles & Lines' that have been created in your Address Position then every golfer can instantly create an efficient and effective 'Golf Swing' and should therefore try to understand and use their own ability!!

It 'Is' my intention to describe how to encourage your 'Hand & Arm Swing' to utilise space around your body that your 'Core Body Rotation' creates when rotating around your 'Spine Angle'. This will result in a free flowing and unrestricted 'Hand & Arm Swing' (Golf Swing) that will work effectively and efficiently in all playing conditions and circumstances!

Important Point!

Before I start talking about the movements within your 'Golf Swing' there is one point I feel needs to be made very clear!

"Only ever use one 'Swing Thought' or work at one area of your 'Golf Swing' at any time and keep your thoughts simple and clear at all times!"

Thinking of numerous 'Swing Thoughts' or 'Swing Positions' can only result in confused and nervous tension being created in your 'Hand & Arm Swing' that will result in your Golf Swing breaking down!

My aim, with this 'Instruction' is to give a clear insight into how simple and efficient your 'Golf Swing' can be providing you have learnt and taken care of some 'Key Areas' of your game prior to focussing on your 'Hand & Arm Swing!

Like working through an 'Address & Posture Routine' to ensure that your 'Address & Posture Position' is squarely positioned to your 'Target Line' and that you are in a balanced and stable position when settling over the ball prior to making your swing.

My Address & Posture Lessons.

Then after you have completed your Address & Posture Position focus on rotating your 'Core Body Movements' round 'Angles & Lines' that have been created in your 'Address & Posture Position', such as your 'Spine Angle' and 'Body Line'.

If these 'Lines' are correctly set then a foundation of Angles & Lines will be created for your 'Core Body Movements' (Stomach, Chest & Shoulders) to rotate fully and freely round that will create space around your Body for your 'Hand & Arm Swing' to move freely into!!

My Body Movement Lessons.

I would now like to assume that you have 'Addressed' the ball correctly and that your 'Core Body Movements' are rotating effectively and efficiently around your 'Spine Angle' to create space for your Hand & Arm Swing to move freely into so I am now able to talk about and focus on creating an efficient and simple 'Hand & Arm Swing' (Golf Swing) that performs on an optimum Swing Plane and Swing Path.

To do this effectively I am going to breaking your 'Hand & Arm Swing' into five 'Simple Lesson Headings'. Inside each 'Heading' I will give a clear description of positions together with an explanation of movements concerning each 'Lesson'. My 'Lessons Headings' are;

  1. Taking the club away from the Golf Ball.
  2. Moving into the Backswing.
  3. Moving into the Downswing.
  4. The Hitting Area & Impact Position.
  5. Moving into the Follow-Through.

I would like you to work through each Lesson in the order shown to help give some simple explanation that will ultimately create an effective, simple and consistently repeating 'Hand & Arm Swing'. I will describe key positions to achieve in your 'Hand & Arm Swing' then combine these positions with 'Feel' in your 'Hand & Arm Swing' that will draw out your 'Natural Ability' and place it into your 'Golf Swing'. After completing my 'Hand & Arm Swing Instruction' I would then like to sum up by talking about using some examples of 'Swing Thoughts' that can be used to trigger and control your 'Golf Swing'.

                  An example of a 'Swing Plane'.

The term 'Swing Plane' describes the plane your 'Hand & Arm Swing' travels on in relation to your 'Spine Angle'. If we take a view looking down your 'Target Line' this swing term refers to a point that can be drawn from your ball and up to and through your right shoulder.

                  An example of a 'Swing Path'.

The term 'Swing Path' describes the path that your Clubhead is traveling on when moving round your body in your 'Golf Swing'. This term can also be used to describe the width in your Golf Swing.

Every golfer has an optimum 'Swing Plane' and 'Swing Path' that suits their build and 'Golf Swing'. Please remember that the foundation of 'Angles & Lines' created from your 'Address & Posture Position' will automatically help to create these two swing terms!!
