When playing a Chip Shot, one of the most important factors to consider is managing the risk involved in the shot by taking into account all the information the shot presents. This will help you to visualise and plan your shot effectively, increasing confidence and commitment when playing the shot.
There are two primary techniques for chipping, and your choice should depend on the type of shot you are playing, the conditions you are playing in and the level of risk you need to manage.
A Descending Blow:
- Ball Flight: This technique produces a lower ball flight with more roll once the ball lands.
- How to Execute: Using a descending blow helps to strike the ball before striking the turf.
- When to Use: This type of shot is ideal when you have plenty of green to work with and need the ball to roll out towards your target area.
- Risk Profile: It creates less spin in the shot with a lower ball flight making it a useful shot to play on flatter or uphill greens.
A Sweeping Swing Motion:
- Ball Flight: This method creates a higher flight with more spin, resulting in less roll after the ball lands.
- How to Execute: Use a sweeping motion, brushing the grass under the ball at impact to loft the ball higher.
- When to Use: Great for tighter pin positions where you need the ball to stop quickly.
- Risk Profile: More spin and higher flight makes this a higher-risk shot, especially in windy conditions, but it’s ideal for precise control when slopes or tight landing areas are involved.
